Identity of Cause of Cognitive Impairment by Statins

Date: 23 April 2013

Researchers at the University of Arizona have discovered an off-target effect of statins that may explain a drug side-effect in a small population of statin users which causes neurotoxicity. The researchers have learned that a deficiency of the protein fascin may account for this effect. While work in this field is ongoing, the researchers hope this finding will be useful in determining which future statin patients may be susceptible to this statin-induced cognitive impairment.
